May Day Commemoration and Activism

On International Workers’ Day, more than 500 workers gathered under the slogan “Decent Work for All – Advancing Social Justice and Economic Progress” in a powerful show of unity and strength, in Sri Lanka.

Organized by Dabindu Collective with the joint collaboration of the Grassroots Workers Collective, the event brought together a wide coalition of groups, , demanding dignity, fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for every worker. The day began with a vibrant bike parade from the 18th Mile Post Katunayake, symbolizing solidarity and determination, before converging at Katunayake Ground. Workers carried placards and raised slogans demanding dignity, fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for every worker.

Women-led organizations took the stage, addressing critical issues such as labour law reforms, unpaid care work, voting rights, language rights, social security, ILO C190, land rights, and maternity benefits. The chief guest and Executive Director of the Women’s Media Group, delivered a special speech, while the Program Director of the Shramabhimani Kendraalso announced a workers’ charter incorporating the demands of the working women. The rally concluded with a strong May Day statement from Dabindu Collective, reaffirming the commitment to continue the struggle for justice, equality, and workers’ rights.
