Jhapa, Nepal – On 11 March 2025, the Tea and Coffee Workers Union of Nepal (TCWUN) held a mobilization campaign in Jhapa district, aimed at advocating for workers’ rights and benefits within Nepal’s tea plantations. A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister of Koshi Province in Biratnagar on 30 March 2025, outlining critical demands such as minimum wage, social security, and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards.

Affiliated with the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), TCWUN has been actively addressing labor rights, low wages, and social protection issues affecting workers in the sector. Despite the long history of the tea industry in Nepal, workers have long faced poor working conditions and inadequate support systems.

The mobilization focused on raising awareness and uniting workers at the national level. Objectives included organizing meetings to discuss issues such as minimum wage, social security, and occupational safety, while preparing a memorandum to present these demands at the provincial level. The campaign also utilized social and mass media to build awareness and solidarity. A series of 20 local-level meetings across districts such as Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar, Dhankuta, and Sankhuwasabha engaged workers and local leaders, creating a platform for grievances and providing education on workers’ rights.

A key milestone was the First National Congress of the Tea and Coffee Workers Union Nepal, held in Birtamod, Jhapa, on 11 March 2025, which selected the union leadership. The congress discussed key issues like fair wages and social security, emphasising the need for collective action. It concluded with a strong commitment to pursue necessary reforms within the industry.

In conclusion, TCWUN’s mobilization has established a strong foundation for continued advocacy. Through local meetings, national congresses, and media outreach, the union has empowered workers, raised awareness, and is pushing for long-term improvements in Nepal’s tea and coffee industries.
